Objectives of the Course

To examine the change of rituals after Iconoclasm, as well as its influence on ecclesiastical architecture and new architectural forms . The present course aims to teach the changes in Church architecture, the newly emerging plan types; and the structural character of church architecture in Middle and Late Byzantine Periods.

Course Content

To discuss the churches built in the period after İkonaklazma in Anatolia and outside Anatolia ,according to the plan shape by dividing them into groups. Examples of Religious Architecture in the Middle and Late Byzantine Period Monumental:Churches closed Greek cross plan Churches are built with the Vestibuled Plan. Eight-Aided Churches. Alfalfa Plan Type. Churches with which it co-cross plan basilica. Additional structures were built in the late Byzantine Period. Facade features and changes in the Middle and Late Byzantine Period Church architecture are examined.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to define the concept “Church with Closed Greek Cross Plan”, analyze the plan and façade features of these buildings.
2.To be able to assess the place of Churches with Closed Greek Cross Plan in Byzantine Architecture in Middle Byzantine Period and later through comparison with previous or later structures with different or similar function in terms of plan and façade features.
3.To be able to define narthex Plan Type and comprehend the typologic distinction of these churches.
4.To be able to define octa-style churches and comprehend the place of buildings with this plan within the scope of Byzantine Architecture
5.To be able to describe other plan types seen in Churches of Late Byzantine Period, with some examples.
