Objectives of the Course

To examine the Roman-Early Christian and Early Byzantine wall paintings in Anatolia through examples of non-technical, stylistic and iconographic analysis initially.In addition, during and after İkonoclasm, understanding of the changing decoration, and accompanied by examples of the new program by examining the image, depicting the effect on the period will be discussed.

Course Content

In this course, the late Roman-Early Christian period wall paintings within the Roman Catacomps murals and that decorate the structures of the early Byzantine period mosaics in Italy will be the subject, as well as during and after İkonaklazma, Anatolia and the activities of non-structural patterns emerging over the image will be examined in detail.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to define Byzantine painting art, and production techniques ,discuss the similarities and differences according to different periods.
2.To be able to evaluate image examples of Byzantine periods, in terms of the iconographic and stylistic features.
3.To be able to evaluate the Byzantine painting in terms of political, social, religious, economic, and artistic dimensions of the period.
4.To be able to discuss political, social, religious, economic and artistic condition of the period by taking into account the topics covered in the Byzantine Painting Art
5.Students learn decoration of mosaic and fresco technique in Byzantine art.
