Objectives of the Course

This is an introductory course for English Literature from the Anglo-Saxons to the Eighteenth century. Texts from different genres are discussed and analysed. Students will write research papers and make presentations in this course.

2.Establishes the connections of historical, social, cultural and religious aspects in transition from oral literature to the written literature.
3.Lays bare differences of the Old English works from the modern English and analyses in terms of literary content.
4.Reads sub-texts through symbols and myths by comparing literary texts.
5.Expresses and develops ideas by referring to literary texts.
6.Establishes cause and effect relationship between the events in the literary texts and characteristics of the period
7.Analyzes characters in the texts
8.Determines narrative technics and types in the texts
9.Develops critical perspective on literary texts
10.Expresses in written form the findings in the critically analyzed and read texts.

Week 1 - Theoretical
From the Celts, Romans, Vikings to Anglo- Saxon Britain.
Week 2 - Theoretical
After information on Old-English and Old English literature representative works like Beowulf, The Wanderer, The Seafarer, The Dream of the Rood, The Battle of Maldon are examined according to their importance and content.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Historical, socio-cultural and literary developments from the Middle English period to the Norman Conquest. Allegory and romance tradition: Piers Plowman, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Geoffrey Chaucer, his time and contributions to the English language and literature.. Canterbury Tales and other works.. Chaucer’s influence and followers. Balad
Week 5 - Theoretical
Renaissance, Reformation, Humanism. Poetry in the sixteenth century. Pastoral, epic poetry and sonnet: Sir T. Wyatt, Sir P. Sidney, E. Spenser
Week 6 - Theoretical
Prose in the sixteenth century: Utopia, Arcadia, The Unfortunate Traveller, Euphues.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Drama and its development in England:: Mystery play, Miracle play, Morality play, interlude.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Pre-Shakespearean English drama: University Wits, B. Jonson, Christopher Marlowe.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Shakespeare and drama: Types of his plays and selected readings of them.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Shakespeare and poetry: sonnets and other poems.
Week 11 - Theoretical
B. Jonson and the Cavalier poets. J. Donne and metaphysical poetry.

John Milton and Commonwealth.
