Objectives of the Course

The aim of the course is to enable the student to identify the gods and deities from Greek and Roman mythology, state their functions and summarise the stories, identify their use and allusions in art and literature, analyse their meanings and compare and contrast various applications in art and life.

Course Content

The definitions of myth and mythology are clarified and illustrated. The characteristics of Prehellenic and Classical mythology are stated. The Creation, cosmology, other world myths are examined and the major and minor gods (sky, earth, water underworld) and the adventures of the heroes are examined and their significance are discussed.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to comprehend the mythological charaters and figures whic play a significant part and inspirational role in English Literature.
2.To be able to acquire necessary knowledge about and insight into Greek and Roman mythological legends which are frequently referred to by prominent literary figures such as Shakespeare and other men of letters.
3.To be able to acquire the understanding and awareness that mythology does not soley belong to Ancient Greek or Roman geography but it is also one of the most importatnt components of the Anatolian civilizations.
4.To be able to comprehend different civilizations that flourished in Asia Minor and elsewhere.
5.To be able to acquire information about the basic concepts of Greek mythology.
