The aim of the course is to enable the student to identify the gods and deities from Greek and Roman mythology, state their functions and summarise the stories, identify their use and allusions in art and literature, analyse their meanings and compare and contrast various applications in art and life.
The definitions of myth and mythology are clarified and illustrated. The characteristics of Prehellenic and Classical mythology are stated. The Creation, cosmology, other world myths are examined and the major and minor gods (sky, earth, water underworld) and the adventures of the heroes are examined and their significance are discussed.
