The aim of this course is to enable the student to gain Turkish-English translation skills, through the translation of sample short passages (excluding purely professional material), mostly from newspapers, magazines, journals, and other popular publications such as popular news, society columns, music columns, recipes, sports news, weather reports, advertisements, popular interviews. The course also enables the student to categorise different translation methodologies, to identify syntactic and semantic difficulties that may be encountered during the translation of different texts, to recognise and correct translation mistakes, hence helping the student to acquire sophisticated translation skills.
This course focuses on in-class/at-home translations in the fields which are mentioned in the course objectives. The different translations of the same text are discussed and compared in terms of their textual and linguistic characteristics. Translation homeworks are critically evaluated.
