Objectives of the Course

THIS COURSE AIMS: 1. to introduce students to a range of poems derived from late 19th and 20th century; 2. to introduce the movements that emerged in the 20th century and prominent precursors and poets of the Imagism and Modernism; other less influential movements such as Georgian poetry and Trench Poetry; 3. to enable students to trace characteristics from the poems of the period.

Course Content

By examining the works derived from late 19th century and 20th century Georgian, Imagist and Modernist poets, E Housman, Thomas Hardy, Wilfrid Wilson Gibson, John Masefield, William Watson, W.B. Yeats, Hilaire Belloc, Rupert Brooke, Francis Ledwidge, G.K. Chesterton, Richard Aldington, Amy Lowell, T. S. Eliot, Edward Thomas, Wilfred Owen, Isaac Rosenberg, Rudyard Kipling, Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves, students are expected to grasp the gist of the movements and the period.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to demonstrate knowledge of a range of poems derived from late 19th and 20th century;
2.To be able to demonstrate knowledge of the movements that emerged in the 20th century and prominent precursors and poets of the Imagism and Modernism;
3.To be able to demonstrate knowledge of other less influential movements such as Futurism, Vorticism, Georgian poetry and Trench Poetry;
4.To be able to demonstrate knowledge of the emotional, economic and political factors that initiated the movements;
5.To be able to trace characteristics from the poems of the period.
