Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable the student to acquire the knowledge and skills to recognise and interpret the social, political, cultural and literary aspects of Shakespeare's time; to understand the development of Shakespeare's literary career, his contribution to English literature, and his ideas and practices of comedy and tragedy; and to analyse the distinctive qualities of Shakespeare's dramatic art through an in-depth textual study of selected examples, thereby developing a critical viewpoint.

Course Content

Shakespeare's selected dramatic works in various genres are identified, analysed, and discussed in relation to the social, political, cultural, and literary developments of the Elizabethan period.
