Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to focus on the fictions from the latter half of the twentieth century to the present through an in-depth analysis of the literary techniques and themes as well as contemporary literary movements reflected in these fictions.

Course Content

This course will be an introductory survey of representative contemporary British writers from about 1950 to the present. We will focus on writers' responses to earlier traditions of realism and modernism, exploring the techniques of narrative fiction, offered by their work; we will also trace the themes that these authors raise as they both respond and contribute to the increasingly postmodern experience of British culture. Cultural, historical, and theoretical context will be integrated into discussion by means of lecture and secondary readings and resources.
