Objectives of the Course

The objective of the "Turkish Political Life I" course is to analyze the significant issues, actors, events, and structural changes that have influenced Turkish political life from the final period of the Ottoman Empire to the present day from a political, legal, economic, and social standpoint. The course evaluates the periods in chronological order.

Course Content

The “Turkish Political Life I” course examines the modernization efforts from the 18th to the 20th centuries in the formation of modern Türkiye (that is Tanzimat Period and New Ottomans, and the First Period of Constitutional Monarchy), the effects of the Ottoman bureaucratic structure on today’s Türkiye, 19th century economic policies, hot conflicts in the light of political developments (such as the Crimean War, the 93 War, and the Balkan Wars), discussions regarding the legal structure, social events such as mass migrations and political events and transformations after 1908 (such as the rise of the Unity and Progress Party, the Event of 31st March, the controlling government of the Unity and Progress Party and the opposition in the Second Constitutional Monarchy), and evaluates (after entering the 1st World War and National Struggle for Independence) the history until the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye, biographies of leaders, political institutions, and other key concepts. The course “Turkish Political Life I” seeks to equip students with the historical and conceptual insights necessary to comprehend the socio-economic and cultural influences that shape Turkish politics.
