The objective of the “Turkish Political Life II” course is to analyze significant topics, prominent characters, pivotal events, and the structural transformations they engendered in Turkish political life from the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye to the 2000s, through political, economic, and social lenses. The periods are assessed chronologically and examined within the context of cause-and-effect relationships.
In the “Turkish Political Life II” course, the political, social, and economic infrastructure that shaped modern Türkiye after the Republic, the changes and transformations in the Early Republic (or Atatürk Period), Türkiye’s position during World War II, the transition to a multi-party political system, the Democrat Party Period and Menderes Governments between 1950-1960, the 1960 Coup and the political process that followed, the political, economic, and social events between 1971-1980, the September 12, 1980 coup and the transformation of the political, economic, and social structure, Türkiye in the 1990s, and the political structure of the 2000s are analyzed through the biographies of leaders, political institutions, and other key concepts. The “Turkish Political Life II” course seeks to equip students with the contemporary historical and conceptual insights necessary to comprehend the socio-economic and societal determinants of Turkish politics.
