Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to examine the historical development of management theories by introducing classical, neo-classical, modern, and contemporary management approaches within a theoretical framework; and to enable students to critically evaluate management thought in the context of labour processes, organisational structures, and workplace relations. The course will also explore how key managerial functions—such as decision-making, leadership, motivation, and organisational behaviour—affect employer-employee relations, with a particular focus on the dynamics of management specific to the field of industrial relations.

Course Content

Within the historical development of management theories, classical, neo-classical, modern, and contemporary approaches are examined; key concepts such as management processes, leadership, motivation, and organisational behaviour are analysed. The course focuses on the impact of management approaches on working life and workplace relations.

Learning Outcomes
1.Analyzes the historical development of management theories within classical, neo-classical, and modern frameworks; comparatively evaluates their core assumptions, objectives, and implementation methods.
2.Analyzes organizational structures in public and private sectors; interprets the functioning of managerial approaches such as Weberian bureaucracy, lean management, total quality management, and strategic management to enhance managerial effectiveness.
3.Utilizes theoretical knowledge and skills related to core management functions such as leadership, motivation, decision-making, and teamwork to develop constructive approaches that contribute to improving organizational performance.
4.Evaluates the evolution of management thought from scientific management to the present within social, economic, and political contexts; critically discusses management theories within the framework of ethical principles and social responsibility.
5.Identifies digitalization-, automation-, and AI-based management practices; analyzes the impacts of these transformations on organizational structure, workforce management, and decision-making processes.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical
The concept of management is defined along with its scope and relation to social sciences. The social foundations of managerial thought are discussed.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Within the scientific management approach, concepts such as division of labour, time study, and efficiency are examined. Taylor’s managerial perspective is evaluated.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Henri Fayol’s functions and principles of management are analysed, focusing on their impact on organisational structure.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Types of authority and the rational organisation model are discussed within Weber’s theory of bureaucracy.
Week 5 - Theoretical
The human relations approach of the neo-classical era is examined in the context of organisational communication and informal structures.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Behavioural management theory is evaluated together with individual-focused approaches and motivation theories.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Through the systems approach, the interaction of organisations with their environment, input-output processes, and the search for equilibrium are discussed.
Week 8 - Theoretical
The contingency approach is analysed through the adaptation of organisational structures to environmental conditions.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Total Quality Management is discussed within the framework of participatory decision-making and continuous improvement principles.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Lean management focuses on waste reduction, process simplification, and employee involvement.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Strategic management theory is examined alongside concepts such as vision, mission, environmental analysis, and competitive advantage.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Leadership styles, use of power, and decision-making processes are discussed in terms of their impact on organisational effectiveness.
Week 13 - Theoretical
The influence of management theories on labour processes, organisational structures, and employer-employee relations is evaluated.
Week 14 - Theoretical
Current trends in managerial thought are discussed in the context of digitalisation, flexibility, and network-based structures.
