The department of carries out a 4-year program to educate students to become an agricultural engineer on open field, protected cultivation, breeding and post-harvest handling of horticultural crops. The program is composed of two-years of basic compulsory courses on science and agriculture. Third and fourth years are devoted mainly to horticulture and related topics. There are theoretical and practical (field and laboratory) courses. However, few electives and term-works prepared allow students to focus on products/topics that they are interested.
History
The department was founded in 1992 as the Soil Science and Plant Nutrition Divisions. Spesific education on soil science and plant nutrition has been given as undergraduate level since 1999-2000 and graduate level since 2003-2004.
Mission
To train engineers who are equipped with contemporary and practical knowledge on issues related to their field of work, have developed problem-solving skills, have the professional knowledge and experience and communication skills to lead their environment; It has undertaken to fulfill its obligation to serve the society by carrying out research and application functions, and to access and disseminate information for the development and welfare of its nation.
Vision
To be an educational institution that is nationally recognized and demanded for the engineers it trains, and that complies with national and international norms in the field of soil science and plant nutrition with its education system and content.
Purpose
The purpose of the Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition is conducting researches to solve the problems related to the agricultural production and the soil of the country and the region and also to train Soil Science and Plant Nutrition specialists that equipped with contemporary knowledge, absorbed the work issues and related with the realities of the country´s agriculture.
Physical Infrastructure
Soil Science department has 10 room for officers, 5 laboratories (Soil physics laboratory, Soil microbiology laboratory, Analytical chemistry laboratory, Plant nutrition and soil fertility laboratory, Remote sensing and Geographical information systems(GIS) laboratory), soil preparing room, climatology room, greenhouse on 220 m2 and experimental field.

The department has 3 professors, 1 associate professor, 5 assistan professor, and 2 research assistants.
