Objectives of the Course

The aim of the course is to present the students the art and history of the Byzantine Empire.

Course Content

An overview of the artistic history of the Byzantine Empire, the social and physical structure of Byzantine cities, religious beliefs in Byzantine (the life of Jesus), and the effects of religion on art, Christian iconography (used in architectural decoration and frescoes, mosaics), Iconoclastic period and the general characteristics of the art of painting developed in Cappadocia, the basilicas of Istanbul and Anatolia

1.To be able to identify the historical process of the Byzantine Period
2.To be able to recall Jesus' life, the Bible and the iconography of Bible

5.To be able to defines the general characteristics of Byzantine art
