Objectives of the Course

It is aimed to teach the students the basic principles of page design on the theoretical and practical basis. In this course students will be taught design methods and strategies about print and digital publishing.

Course Content

This course will provide theoretical and practical training on printed publications such as newspapers and magazines; digital broadcasting such as new media, mobile supported electronic publications. In addition to this, items such as publication design elements, page layout, typography, colour usage will be handled in detail.

Learning Outcomes
1.Have information about the types of printed and digital publications.
2.Be able to explain the basic concepts of broadcast design principles.
3.Learn about broadcasting technology and printing techniques used in the design process.
4.Be able to define general design elements of publication design.
5.Have information on topics such as typography, page layout, visuals, colour which are publishing design elements.
6.Learns the programs to be used in publication design in general terms.

Types of electronic publishing: electronic magazines, mobile electronic publishing, new media applications etc.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Introduction to publication design and principles of publication design
Week 5 - Theoretical
Publishing technology, technics and types of printing
Week 6 - Theoretical
Elements of publication design: formats, page layout, typography, images, colour

Page layout: page size, column grid, headline placement, Special effects, positive-negative space-I

Page layout: page size, column grid, headline placement, Special effects, positive-negative space-II

Typography: hierarchy, text properties, font, size, letter spacing and line height, readability

Images: illustrations, publication, photographs, drawings

Colour: types of colour, complementary colours, emphasis, Hue-value-saturation
