Objectives of the Course

The aim of the course is to give information to the students about the formation process of modern Turkish society, social structure, social changes and transformations starting from the 19th century.

Course Content

This course will firstly examine the processes of westernization and modernization that began in the Ottoman Empire. Secondly the basis of the social structure at that time will be discussed. Furthermore, factors that constitute the society such as economic policies, population structure, immigration, urbanization, family structure, educational policy, etc. will be emphasized on this course.

1.Be able to make definitions of social institutions, society, and social structure.
2.Have information about Turkey's social structure and the last period of Ottoman Empire.
3.Know the elements that make up the social structure of Turkey.
4.Be able to discuss the historical context of the formation process of the social structure in Turkey.
5.Explains the effects of economic factors on the social structure.
6.Have knowledge about internal and external migration processes affecting the formation of social structure.
7.Analyse the impact on the social structure of gender issues in Turkey.
8.Have knowledge about the concept of democratization and issue of democratization in Turkey
