Objectives of the Course

It is aimed to explain the concept of genre in cinema and to examine the formal and contextual features of the genres that emerged throughout the history of cinema. The main goal is, provide students the competence to evaluate the relation between film genre and social structure, to criticize and discuss examples of genre films.

Course Content

It is the course that genre settlement in Hollywood, world and Turkish cinema, artistic and commercial dimension of genre films, the relationship between the genre and social, economic and cultural structure, and the characteristics of film genres are examined and evaluated.

Learning Outcomes
1.Explain the emergence and development process of genres.
2.Define the formal and contextual characteristics of genre cinema.
3.Explain the relationship between genre cinema and socio-economic, cultural structure and ideology
4.Evaluate the conventions, distinctions, codes, thematic and formal characteristics of which any film contains and understand whether that film is a genre movie or not.
5.Interpret the changing process of genre films in the context of social and historical background
