This course focuses entirely on listening-speaking based, functional, real-life situations to prepare students for social and academic life. Corpus-informed spoken English is used to provide authentic examples of formal and informal speech during the course. The course is also designed to help students become better speakers using speaking strategies. Integrated grammar lessons are incorporated to the course so that students can communicate effectively as well.
During this course, students can find opportunities to improve their speaking and listening skills about how to describe themselves, give personal information, ask for repetitions/spell, express doubt, order in a restaurant, follow a script, explain problems, offer help, express desire/obligation/future plans, explain problems, talk about the past weekend, explain past problems at work or school,invite and ask favors,make appointments. Moreover, this course focuses on listening for main idea/details, listening for reductions, listening for stressed words, rising and falling intonation. Content-related basic grammar points, like Simple Present, modals, Simple Past tense, Future tenses are also emphasized during the course.
