Objectives of the Course

Objectives of this course are to help students to understand the reasons for difficulties and disability characteristics, separation of different groups of obstacles, they reached, a special educational approach to realize.

Course Content

Special education, the basic principles of special education, the reasons for difficulties, the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, the historical approach to disability, mentally handicapped, hearing impaired, visually impaired, physically handicapped, language and communication disorders, chronic disease, specific learning difficulty, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, autism and the characteristics and education of gifted children, responses observed in the families of children who need special education, special education in our country, institutions and organizations established for this purpose.

Learning Outcomes
1.Will be able to describe the basic concepts of special education.
2.Will be able to describe roles and responsibilities of personnel in special education.
3.Will be able to discuss the international and national legislation and its implications for the education of children with special needs and the organizational structure related to special education in Turkey.
4.Describe the children with autism spectrum disorder and their mental deficiency.
5.Describe children with hearing impairment and their characteristics.
6.Will be able to describe the children with visual impairment and their characteristics.
7.Will be able to describe children with learning disabilities and their characteristics.
8.Will be able to describe children with emotional and behavioral disorders and their characteristics.
9.Describe children with language and speech disorders and their characteristics.
10.Will be able to describe gifted children and their characteristics.
