Objectives of the Course

To gain knowledge and skills related to health protection and development in the neonatal period, evaluation and care of the 0-28 day baby and appropriate midwifery interventions in cases of deviation from health.

Course Content

In this course, neonatal health problems in the world and in Turkey, neonatal physiology and postnatal adaptation, health diagnosis of the newborn, developmental care practices, evaluation and care of risky newborns, nutrition, immunization and fluid-electrolyte requirements of the newborn, paediatric drug applications, newborns with hyperbilirubinemia and care, transport of the newborn, prevention and care of neonatal infections, pain management and special applications in the newborn, newborns with cardiovascular, respiratory, GI, endocrine, neurological, metabolic and urinary system problems and care, newborn screening, preparation of the newborn for discharge and home care, special invasive applications for newborns.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to explain the role and importance of midwifery in the neonatal period
2.To have knowledge about maintaining the health of the newborn
3.To know the status of neonatal health in the world and in Turkey
4.To have knowledge about the physiology and postnatal adaptation of the newborn
5.To be able to diagnose the health of the newborn in the delivery room and to meet the care needs in the delivery room
6.To be able to diagnose the health of the newborn next to the mother and meet the care needs
7.To know paediatric drug administration routes and to be able to perform safe drug administration
8.To be able to define the nutritional characteristics of the newborn period
9.To know developmental care practices in the newborn
10.To know the newborn with hyperbilirubinemia and to be able to meet the care needs
11.To be able to evaluate and care for the problems of risky newborns
12.To know paediatric fluid electrolyte imbalance and to evaluate deviations from normal
13.To have knowledge about the transport of the newborn
14.To know the universal standards in the prevention of neonatal infections and to be able to care
15.To be able to manage pain in the newborn
16.To have knowledge about newborn screening
17.To be able to distinguish the deviation from normal in newborns with problems related to all body systems and to be able to care for them
18.To know special invasive applications for newborns
19.To be able to provide health education and counselling to the mother about home care of her newborn baby
20.To be able to provide health education and counselling to prepare the mother for the discharge of her baby, to be able to demonstrate in practice in education
