Objectives of the Course

This course examines the complex and evolving relationship between media and politics within both democratic and authoritarian contexts. It aims to explore how traditional and digital media influence political agendas, shape public opinion, and impact electoral outcomes. The course will address the role of media as a political actor, a tool of propaganda, a platform for civic engagement, and a space of power struggles. Additionally, it encourages students to reflect on the role of words and images in public political life.

Course Content

The course will focus on topics such as media systems, agenda-setting, framing, political communication strategies, media ownership and regulation, disinformation, media populism, and the mediatization of politics. Through theoretical readings, case studies, and contemporary examples (including election campaigns, political scandals, and international crises), students will develop the knowledge and skills to critically analyze the impact of media on political processes and democratic participation.
