In the course of Child Protection in Physical Education and Sport, in the context of the fundamental rights of the child, his/her right to rest, to utilise his/her free time, to play, to participate freely and fully in age-appropriate physical and cultural activities will be presented. Ways of providing appropriate and equal opportunities for children to access physical, sportive and cultural activities and events will be discussed. In order to establish the sports environment within the framework of these principles, interactive suggestions will be developed for the development of protection policies in sports and the creation of safe and inclusive sports areas. The risks and dangers that may be posed to children by certain practices that have become dominant and normalised in sports culture, which plays an important role in children's socialisation processes, will be discussed. The effects of coercive and oppressive qualities such as power, prestige, performance, power relations, achievement orientation that may harm children's well-being will be discussed. In addition to these qualities, the potential of these qualities to reveal the risks of violence and abuse against children due to the widespread experience of physical relationships in sports will be emphasised. Thus, discussions will be made on the ways to protect children from the culture of violence that is taken for granted and normalised by athletes and their families as well as coaches, administrators and other professionals in sports.
At the end of this course, students will be able to learn how to define everyone under the age of 18 as a child and how to take effective protection measures and protect the child age group. In this period of increased sensitivity towards children, they can be orientated towards developing a wide range of approaches to child protection and systems that take into account different situations. With an athlete/child-centred approach, they can adopt an approach that prioritises their health and well-being as well as their sporting careers. They can realise creating safe areas for children and taking necessary protection measures within the framework of children's rights with a holistic approach. By developing a holistic approach to child protection in sport, they can increase their awareness of the basic principles of child protection in sport.
