Objectives of the Course

This course is designed to give students a practical knowledge of the principles and practice of molecular genetic technologies to investigate and exploit genetics of farm animals.

Course Content

1. History of genetics science 2. Structure of genetic material and genome organization, extra-nuclear inheritance, DNA replication and recombination 3. Linkage and gene mapping, chromosome and gene mutations 4. Essentials of DNA isolation 5. Recombinant DNA technology, cloning of genes and construction of genomic libraries 6. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) 7. Electrophoretic separation and visualization of DNA bands 8. Fluorescence InSitu Hybridisation (FISH), Restricted Fragment Length polymorphisms (RFLP) and PCR-RFLP 9. Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD), Short Tandem Repeats (STR or microsatellites) 10. Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP), DNA microarrays, DNA sequencing 11. Detection of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL), Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) 12. Paternity tests and pedigree verification
