Objectives of the Course

Acquisition of principles related to the prediction of breeding values in farm animals. On the basis of this knowledge students will be able to apply these methods to solve practical problems.

Course Content

1. Definition of breeding value and accuracy terms. Investigation of data sources used for breeding value prediction .Fixed, random and mixed models. 2. Fundamental principles and related assumptions of univariate and multivariate breeding value prediction 3. Breeding value prediction with different source of records 4. Estimation of additive and multiplicative correction coefficients. Standardization of performances 5. Introductory matrix algebra 6. Prediction with selection indices 7. Genetic relationship between relatives and computation methods 8. Theory of BLUP methodology, 9. Sire model 10. Animal and reduced animal model 11. Models including environmental effects: Repeatability model and models with common environmental effects 12. Definition, and use of maternal effects in linear models 13. Computing of dominance relationship matrix, animal model with dominance effect 14. Integration of genomic data tothe BLUP models
