Objectives of the Course

During the course "History of the Egypt Issue", it is aimed to examine and understand issues regarding then-Ottoman province Egypt both within international and national contexts and show how it affected Ottoman Empire.

Course Content

During the course, the place and the features of Egypt under Ottoman rule, Egypt’s strategic position and the impact of this position on the international political area will be examined. Also, 1798 French invasion of Egypt, British reaction to this invasion and Ottoman’s attitude towards it and how these factors have affected Egypt will be revealed with respect to the Mehmed Ali Pasha rebellion. Besides, the impacts of the ideological inheritence of Mehmed Ali Pasha on İsmail and Tevfik Pasha’s periods will be discussed taking some relevant events into consideration. Within this context, 1882 British invasion of Egypt and the changing situation of Egypt Question and Sultan Abdulhamid II’s policies of Egypt will be revealed and the effects of Abdulhamid’s understanding of foreign policy and diplomacy on the Egypt Question will be analysed. Considering the position of Egypt Question in the international diplomacy, the ifinal situation of Egypt Question before WWI and the loss of the rule of Egypt will be studied.
