Objectives of the Course

The course "Nationalism in Ottoman Empire and Independence Movements" aims to understand the political character of the French Revolution within the context of the spread of nationalism and its effects on Ottoman Empire.

Course Content

In order to understand nationalism movements in Ottoman State, theories of nationalism will be taken into consideration and the change of the understanding of nation will be discussed. While doing this, the political conditions in which nationalism movements in Ottoman State occured will be analysed with respect to the historical context of French Revolution. Also, the attitudes of Ottoman non-Muslims and their places in the rebellions and independence movements will be revealed. Herein, Serbian, Greek, Bulgarian and Armenian rebellions will be examined within international context. Besides, Ottoman precautions to rebellions and independence movements such as The Imperial Edict of Gulhane, The Royal Edict of Reform and nation regulations will be taken into consideration.
