Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide a comparative overview of the political, military and cultural interaction between Christian Europe and the Islamic world from the 7th to the 13th century. The course focuses on the spectrum of political, commercial, religious, military, military, and intellectual interactions that preceded the Crusades across a wide geography. The course aims to provide students with the ability to analyze the impact of religious structures on societies, interreligious relations and transformations in the historical process.

Course Content

In this course, in the process leading to the Crusades, Islam and Christianity's unique theological structures, religious institutionalism, religion-state relations, Byzantine-Islamic relations, sectarian divisions and cultural interactions will be discussed in a historical context. Through the method of comparison, the political and social function of religion in the Middle Ages will be evaluated.

Learning Outcomes
1.Student will be able to analyze the historical development of Islam and Christianity in the Middle Ages.
2.Evaluates the social, political and cultural effects of Christianity and Islam comparatively.
3.They learn about the religious, political, economic and social structure of Europe in the process leading to the Crusades.
4.They learn the beginning of the Crusades and the reaction of the Islamic world against it.
5.Analyzes sample events such as the Crusades, Andalusia and Byzantium in multiple dimensions.
6.Gains critical and analytical historiography skills.
