Objectives of the Course

The main aim is to teach, evaluate and discuss the research methods used in sociology.

Course Content

The Method in Social Sciences: its definition, importance at social research and its differentiation from technique; Positivist Method; Emile Durkheim: his Positivist Sociological Method; Karl Popper and Falsification; Kuhn: The Structure of Scientific Revolutions; The Hermeneutic Method; Max Weber: Understanding and Explanation; the Conjunction of Positivist and Hermeneutic Method; Later Wittgeinstein; Peter Winch: The Philosophy of Social Science; Critical Theory and Sociological Method; Habermas: Knowledge and Human Interests; Roy Bhaskar and Critical Realism; The methodology of critical realist.
