Objectives of the Course

Within the scope of the course, from a contemporary political sociological perspective, the nature and content of political sociology, the relations between political action and social structure will be examined. The course will be developed and shaped around the question of what should be the main themes, subjects, concepts and methods of political sociology in the 21st century, taking into account the interests of the students. At the same time, some new and unexpected trends and developments that have gradually started to dominate global politics will be discussed: The concepts of post-truth, populism and authoritarianism, which have left their mark on world politics in the last few years, will be evaluated in a political sociological sense.

Course Content

The nature and scope of political sociology, political action and social structure, political violence in general; escalation of violence (such as ISIS, etc.), political participation and mobilization of resources; Voting, lobbying and political parties, political structure and political opportunities, mass media and social movements, political Islam, political culture, the role of ideas and values in politics, the concept of new politics will be covered in the classroom in a participatory manner.

1.The ability to identify key concepts, issues and debates related to current debates in political sociology
2.The ability to establish the link between social structure and political action by establishing its relationship with general sociological theory while making current discussions of political sociology
3.To gain the ability to conduct empirical research by using sociological methods and techniques while examining the current debates of political sociology from a historical perspective
4.To be able to analyze the causes and consequences of the current debates of political sociology in the context of social inequalities (gender, ethnicity, religious, cultural and economic fields) of the problems examined
5.While discussing the current issues of political sociology, to gain the ability to evaluate current debates and inquiries in this field critically, objectively as well as be sensitive to universal values
