Objectives of the Course

Some sociologists such as Beck, Bauman, Douglas, Furedi, Giddens, and Lupton say that today's societies are characterized by risks and uncertainties. Due to the prevalence of risk society, fear and uncertainty, an extreme risk perception and the evaluation of almost every human action as risky emerges as a new social situation. In addition, the fear of side effects and even interpersonal relationships being seen as risky have led to the development of new cultural forms in society. In parallel with this situation, the security fetishism and security obsession and the culture of not taking risks have begun to affect our social relations. In this course, it is aimed to examine the large-scale social transformations that play a role in the emergence of the risk society. On the other hand, the wide-ranging social aspects of the risk society will be examined through case studies.

Course Content

Current sociological theories in the field of the risk society diverge, albeit belatedly, in explaining why we are so preoccupied with risk. In this course, various approaches in the field of risk society will be examined primarily through the work of their leading representatives. While doing this, basic concepts, theories and orientations will be examined within the framework of theories and different approaches such as risk society, world risk society, scientific and cultural approaches to risk, governmentality and grid-grid models. In addition, the social reasons for the increase in uncertainty and the expression of fear culture in various ways in our social life will be examined.
