Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to get acquainted with basic culture concepts and theories, and to understand the views and perspectives of theorists in the field of cultural studies and interculturality. For this purpose, cultural and literary interaction will be revealed by analyzing the main works, texts and sections from Turkish and Western literatures comparatively, especially during the periods of interaction.

Course Content

Intercultural interaction has created intertextuality in art through literary works, and has also revealed diversity and multiculturalism. From this point of view, works interacting from Turkish and French literature will be analyzed comparatively, such as: - Zavallı Çocuk/Namık Kemal – Hernani/Victor Hugo - Araba Sevdası / Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem-Mme Bovary/Flaubert - Aşk-ı Memnu /Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil – Mme. Bovary/Flaubert - Beyaz Lale/Ömer Seyfettin-Kartopu / Maupassant - Yeşil Gece/Reşat Nuri Güntekin – Gerçek (Vérité) Emile Zola - Beyaz Lale/Ömer Seyfettin-Kartopu / Maupassant Yeşil Gece/Reşat Nuri Güntekin – Gerçek (Vérité) Emile Zola

Learning Outcomes
1.Students compare the contribution of Culture to human life, and the interaction between people and societies through literature.
2.Show the place of culture comparatively in literary works.
3.Establishe the link between different cultures and different geographies and societies.
4.Understands the logic of the strong relationship between culture and language.
5.Know and explain the terms of cultural science.
6.Defines interculturality, lists its content and establishes intercommunal dialogue and meditation.
7.Find the cultural elements in Turkish and French literary works comparatively.
8.Understands the concepts of culture and civilization and distinguishes their contents.
9.Understands high culture and folk culture in Turkih and French culture.
10.Explains knowledge, culture and moral values.
11.Comprehends social and cultural parallelism in literary works and compares them.
12.Identify the interaction between literature and cultures in literary works and explains them through examples and events.
