This course aims to critically examine the structures, dynamics, and transformations of media industries in a global and digital context. It explores the economic, political, and cultural forces shaping media production, distribution, and consumption. Students will engage with key theoretical frameworks and case studies to analyze how power, labor, technology, and policy influence media systems. The course encourages a critical understanding of both traditional and emerging media sectors, fostering research that connects industrial practices with broader societal implications.
The course covers a wide range of topics central to understanding contemporary media industries, including ownership structures, globalization, platformization, labor relations, intellectual property, and regulatory frameworks. It investigates both legacy media (such as film, television, and publishing) and digital platforms (like streaming services, social media, and gaming). Through scholarly readings, industry reports, and case studies, students will explore how technological change and market dynamics are reshaping media production, distribution, and audience engagement.
