Objectives of the Course

Informing students on the actors, political ideologies and the periodization of the Ottoman political life and helping them contextualize the contemporary political and social developments through this historical perspective.

Course Content

This course investigates the political and social life and the transformation and evolution of political thought in the Ottoman Empire from the late 19th century into its demise. Ottoman-Turkish Constitutional, political and governmental system; the development of political culture, electoral systems, role of the political parties, non-governmental organizations and the effect of the public opinion in the stated period are the main themes the course follows. Furthermore, by engaging modernization in Ottoman Empire during this period, political currents such as Pan-Islamism, nationalism, feminism, liberalism and socialism; and political institutions such as the parliament and elections; as well as the issues such as the state-society relationship and transformation of the empire into the republic will be emphasized.
