Objectives of the Course

What is Orient? What is Orientalism? The relationship between imperialism and orientalism, the definition and perception of the “east” in the works/notes of Western travelers, intellectuals and diplomats and the relationship between orientalism and imperialism will be examined. Occidentalist movements and studies are also within the scope of the course. Great powers have been more interested in the East since the 18th century, especially with the realization of the importance of oil. It has a great history of experience in this field. In this strategic field, great Islamic orientalists were trained by the global powers. These trained orientalists have performed important tasks for global imperialism in both theoretical and practical fields. They are rare academic figures who combine theory and practice in one field. It will constitute another important step in strategic history studies.

Course Content

The Great powers's interests on the ethnicities especially from the 18th century is great. They have a great experience in this field. In this strategic area, the imperial powers have grown up major Orientalists. These orientalists have played important roles in strengthening and spreading global imperialism in both the theoretical and practical fields. These are rare academic figures who combine theory and practice in one field. Who these people are and what their purpose is will be examined. In addition, the thought structures of the occidentalist movements against Orientalist movements will be examined.
