The objective of this course is to develop individuals who can integrate cost information into strategic decision-making processes, achieve competitive advantage, and analyze accounting approaches that align with dynamic business environments. The course aims to equip students with the ability to critically examine both traditional and modern costing methods, within the frameworks of strategic management and decision theory, and to apply theoretical and practical knowledge to advanced cost management practices.
This course provides an in-depth examination of the strategic dimension of management accounting. It begins with an analysis of traditional costing methods, such as full costing, variable costing, and standard costing systems, evaluating their role in business decision-making processes. The course then transitions into modern costing approaches, focusing on activity-based costing, target costing, life-cycle costing, and quality cost systems, highlighting their strategic importance. Within the framework of strategic management concepts, topics such as competitive advantage, strategic planning, and value chain analysis are explored in relation to cost information. In the context of decision theory, the course addresses decision-making under uncertainty and risk, multi-criteria decision-making, and the integration of management accounting data into strategic decisions. Strategies for cost management are also covered, including cost reduction techniques, process improvement, and value engineering. As the course progresses, it delves into new approaches in strategic cost management, including strategic performance measurement systems, the balanced scorecard, benchmarking, and advanced cost analysis. All topics are supported by current academic literature, sector-specific practices, and case studies, fostering a critical doctoral-level perspective.
