Objectives of the Course

Teaching the fundamentals and principles of biologic effects of ionizing radiation on mammalian tissues. Radiation causes a process of events extending from microseconds to months and years after exposure. This course offers insight into the therapeutic and deleterious effects of irradiation.

Course Content

Introduction to Radiobiology: Basic Diagnosis and Concepts, General Features of Ionizing Radiation, Radiation Energy Distribution, LET and RBE Concepts, The Effect of Radiation on Nucleic Acids, Enzymes and Proteins, Cell Biology and the Effect of Radiation at the Cellular Level, Cell Death and Survival Curves, Factors Affecting Cellular Response, The Response to Radiation at the Cellular Level, The Effect of Radiation on Normal Tissues, The Effect of Radiation on Tumor Cells, Rationale of Whole Body Irradiation and Radiation Syndromes, Radiation Hazards and Biological Dosimetry, Radiation Protection and Safety Precautions
