Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to enable students to recognize field and horticultural plants, learn the fundamental principles of their cultivation, and initiate orchard/garden establishment and crop production in light of this knowledge.

Course Content

Since the efficient implementation of mechanizationa precursor to unmanned agriculture depends on an understanding of fundamental crop cultivation, the scope of this course lays the groundwork that will guide our students in their professional careers.

Learning Outcomes
1.Learns the definition and importance of plant physiology and plant morphology.
2.Knows root elongation, branching, and the formation of root systems. Learns plant cells, tissues, and organs. Learns the plant vascular system, and the uptake and transport of water and plant nutrients. Learns respiration, transpiration, and photosynthesis activities in plants. Knows the effects of growth hormones.
3.Knows general propagation techniques and can apply them on a species basis.
4.Can identify fundamental problems in the cultivation of horticultural and field plant species and solve them.
5.Can perform and implement annual maintenance operations.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical
Definition, importance, and classification of fruits and vegetables falling within the scope of horticultural crops. Morphological and biological characteristics of organs of horticultural plants such as roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Definition and importance of plant physiology and plant morphology. Plant tissues and organs. Vascular system in plants. Water metabolism in plants, water uptake, water loss, and factors affecting them. Uptake and transport of plant nutrients. Transpiration, photosynthesis, and respiration in plants, and factors affecting these processes.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Morphological characteristics, cultivation requirements, cultivation methods, maintenance operations, and harvesting of cultivated vegetables (Tomato, pepper, eggplant, and melon cultivation).
Week 4 - Theoretical
Morphological characteristics, cultivation requirements, cultivation methods, maintenance operations, and harvesting of cultivated vegetables (Watermelon, cucumber, squash/pumpkin, and okra cultivation).
Week 5 - Theoretical
Industrial plant cultivation (tobacco-cotton).
Week 6 - Theoretical
Morphological and physiological characteristics, ecological requirements, reproductive biology, and production techniques of pome fruits (apple, pear) and nuts (walnut, hazelnut, almond) falling under temperate climate fruit species.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Morphological and physiological characteristics and cultivation of grain legumes (beans, faba beans, peas).
Week 8 - Theoretical
General morphological characteristics of forage crops.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Agronomic characteristics and cultivation of forage crops (alfalfa, vetch).
Week 10 - Theoretical
General morphological and agronomic characteristics and cultivation of cereals (Wheat)
Week 11 - Theoretical
General morphological and agronomic characteristics and cultivation of starch-sugar and oil crops (Potato and sugar beet).
Week 12 - Theoretical
Morphological and physiological characteristics, ecological requirements, reproductive biology, and production techniques of temperate-climate fruit species, including stone fruits (such as peaches and cherries) and small fruits (such as strawberries).
Week 13 - Theoretical
Subtropical climate fruits (olive cultivation).
Week 14 - Theoretical
General morphological and agronomic characteristics and cultivation of oilseed crops (canola and sunflower).
