Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to enable students to understand the laws of thermodynamics and grasp the applications of the fundamental principles of thermodynamics to engineering operations.

Course Content

Fundamental concepts of thermodynamics, forms of energy, systems and their properties, concepts of pressure and temperature, the zeroth law of thermodynamics, phases of a pure substance, phase changes, ideal gases, compressibility factor, the 1st law of thermodynamics and its application to closed and open systems, the 2nd law of thermodynamics, reversible and irreversible processes, Carnot cycle, heat engines, refrigerators, heat pumps, entropy, reversible steady-flow work, reversible work and irreversibility, gas power cycles, Otto and Diesel cycles, refrigeration cycles, gas-vapor mixtures, thermodynamic properties of water vapor, thermodynamic properties of moist air, and air conditioning processes.

4.Ability to comprehend the concept of energy transfer and solve technical problems related to energy transfer via heat, work, and mass.
5.Ability to understand the fundamental principles of the 2nd law of thermodynamics and apply them to systems.
