Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to understand addiction as a biopsychosocial problem; to recognize the processes of risk, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery in substance-related and behavioral addictions; and to evaluate the roles of social work at the individual, family, group, and community levels within the framework of ethical principles.

Course Content

The concept and types of addiction; the biopsychosocial model; risk and protective factors; substance-related and behavioral addictions; prevention; stigma and ethics; assessment, interviewing, and case management; interventions at the individual, family, group, and community levels; treatment, rehabilitation, recovery, and relapse prevention; the service network in Türkiye; case studies and social responsibility activities.

The concept of addiction, basic terminology, and types of substance-related and behavioral addictions

The biopsychosocial approach; individual, family-related, and social risk and protective factors

Basic characteristics and social consequences of tobacco, alcohol, and substance use

Behavioral addictions such as technology, internet, gaming, and gambling addictions
Week 5 - Preparation Work
The effects of addiction on family life, education, working life, and social relationships

Universal, selective, and indicated prevention; awareness-raising and protective activities

Stigma, discrimination, human rights, ethics, confidentiality, and professional boundaries
