Objectives of the Course

The purpose of the Professional Communication course is to provide effective, empathic and ethical communication skills in the field of health and to ensure correct communication with patients, their relatives and the healthcare team.

Course Content

The Professional Communication course aims to develop the skills of healthcare professionals to communicate effectively and empathically with patients, their relatives and colleagues. The course covers topics such as the communication process, verbal and nonverbal communication, active listening, giving feedback, communication with difficult patients and crisis situations, cultural differences, ethical principles and professional boundaries. In this way, students learn communication methods that will increase patient trust in clinical settings, positively affect the treatment process and strengthen their professional relationships.

1.Define the concept of Health Communication, its place in health organization structures, media and quality studies.
2.Can integrate Health Communication activities with their own field of expertise, and analyze medical and social information together.
3.Can define and apply the concepts of verbal and nonverbal communication, motivation, address, interpersonal communication.
4.Can gain competence in becoming a brand in health by adopting the management processes within and outside the institution with Health Communication.
5.Can gain practical competence in patient psychology, communication between patients, physicians and health professionals.

Week 1 - Theoretical
• The basic definition and elements of communication, and its importance in the field of healthcare
Week 2 - Theoretical
• The concept of empathy, its significance in health communication, and the contribution of empathetic communication to the patient-physician relationship
Week 3 - Theoretical
• Effective listening skills, the role of listening in communication, and the importance of listening for healthcare professionals to understand patients
Week 4 - Theoretical
• The definition and types of feedback, and how constructive feedback should be given in healthcare settings
Week 5 - Theoretical
• Nonverbal communication elements such as body language, facial expressions, and eye contact, and how they can be effectively used in healthcare services
Week 6 - Theoretical
• Ethical principles in health communication, fundamental ethical concepts such as patient rights and the protection of confidentiality
Week 7 - Theoretical
• Establishing trust in healthcare services, situations that damage trust, and the importance of trust-based communication
Week 8 - Theoretical
• The impact of cultural differences on communication, the importance of communicating with cultural sensitivity, and cultural competence in healthcare
Week 9 - Theoretical
• Effective communication methods during crises, and the skills needed to communicate properly with patients and their relatives under stress
Week 10 - Theoretical
• Causes of communication-related conflicts among healthcare workers or between staff and patients, and possible resolution strategies
Week 11 - Theoretical
• The role of communication in multidisciplinary healthcare teams, and the importance of effective team communication and collaboration
Week 12 - Theoretical
• Ways to establish correct and effective communication with patients, understanding patient needs, and communication skills that enhance patient satisfaction

• Key points to consider when communicating with patients' relatives, and the role of empathy and understanding in this communication

• Professional communication among healthcare workers, professional boundaries and attitudes, and the importance of reliability and respect
