Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to use knowledge from Behavioral Science (Ethology) to study the behaviors of farm animals and certain companion animals, as well as the factors affecting these behaviors; and to observe and better understand animal behavior in order to enhance productivity and ensure and improve animal welfare in animal production.

Course Content

The course focuses on studying animal behavior and the factors that influence it. Behavioral physiology in animals is covered, and the behaviors observed in cattle, sheep, horses, pigs, dogs, and cats are examined in detail. Behavioral disorders in animals and their effects on animal welfare are also discussed. Topics include the concept of welfare in animal husbandry, the relationship between modern husbandry practices and animal welfare, and the legal regulations governing animal welfare in the European Union and Turkey. Additionally, the course addresses the protection of animal welfare during transport and the procedures applied before and during slaughter.

1.Explains the physiological mechanisms underlying the behavior of companion animals.
2.Explains the social behaviors, reproductive behaviors, and behaviors shaped during the developmental stages of companion animals.
3.Explains what behavioral problems are and their physiological basis.
4.Explains the laws and regulations established regarding animal welfare.
5.Guides farms in providing housing and management conditions that better meet the natural needs of animals, particularly in intensive production, to ensure animal welfare.
