Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide the necessary technical knowledge and practical skills to maintain the hoof health of farm animals and minimize economic losses caused by hoof diseases.

Course Content

This course covers the anatomy of the hoof and foot, the normal and abnormal growth of hooves, and deformed hoof structures along with their causes. It addresses conformational defects and cattle foot diseases, emphasizing their significance, the resulting economic losses, and their causes. Additionally, foot diseases in sheep and goats, as well as preventive measures against these diseases, are included in the course content.

Learning Outcomes
1.Explains the anatomical, physiological, and functional structure of the normal cattle hoof along with the factors affecting hoof growth.
2.Describes daily and annual hoof care in cattle.
3.Explains the causes, significance, and complications of bovine foot diseases along with their management methods.
4.Identifies limping animals within the herd and indicates the degree of lameness.
5.Performs first aid, hoof dressing, and block application in animals with foot disease and provides the necessary care and feeding during the recovery period.

Properties, anatomy, function of the toenail

Demonstration of the anatomy of the toenail and foot on the application materials

Carrier surface of the nail, normal and incorrect elongation of the nail, distorted (deformed) nail structures, causes, distortion disorders
Week 4 - Theoretical
Nail care in cattle (daily, yearly)
Week 5 - Practice
Studies on abattoir material
Week 6 - Theoretical
Toenail cut and trimming (tools used, equipment and technique for animal identification, different nail cutting techniques)

Studies on abattoir material

Diagnosis and grading of lameness

Farm practice, evaluation of lameness

Farm application, lameness evaluation, nail care and cutting
