Objectives of the Course

To provide the necessary technical and applied information to protect foot health in farm animals and to minimize economic losses related to foot diseases.

Course Content

Anatomy of the toenail and foot, normal and erroneous extension of the toenail, damaged (deformed) nail structures, causes, amuity disorders, bovine foot diseases, importance, economic losses and causes, foot diseases and foot diseases in sheep and goats

Learning Outcomes
1.Recognizes the anatomical, physiological and functional structure of the normal cattle nail and knows the factors affecting nail growth;
2.Has the ability to make daily and annual nail care in cattle;
3.Comprehends the causes, importance and complications of bovine foot diseases and knows how to fight them;
4.Recognize the animals limping in the herd and determine the degree of lameness;
5.It can provide first aid, foot dressing and block in animals with foot disease and provides the necessary care-feeding conditions during the recovery period;

Week 1 - Theoretical
Properties, anatomy, function of the toenail
Week 2 - Practice
Demonstration of the anatomy of the toenail and foot on the application materials
Week 3 - Theoretical
Carrier surface of the nail, normal and incorrect elongation of the nail, distorted (deformed) nail structures, causes, distortion disorders
Week 4 - Theoretical
Nail care in cattle (daily, yearly)
Week 5 - Practice
Studies on abattoir material
Week 6 - Theoretical
Toenail cut and trimming (tools used, equipment and technique for animal identification, different nail cutting techniques)
Week 7 - Practice
Studies on abattoir material

Diagnosis and grading of lameness

Farm practice, evaluation of lameness
