The aim of this course is to enable students to evaluate the phenomenon of the city from a historical and cultural perspective; to convey that cities are not only physical settlements but also dynamic structures where political, social, and cultural processes are shaped.
This course aims to examine the historical development of the city thru its cultural, political, social, and spatial dimensions. In the process from ancient cities to modern metropolises, the emergence, transformation, and governance of cities will be examined along the axs of architecture, daily life, public space, identity, belonging, and cultural heritage. Within the scope of the course, themes such as the formation of urban culture, urban-society relations, modernization processes, industrialization, migration, globalization, and cultural diversity will be evaluated, particularly thru examples from the urban traditions of Anatolia, the Mediterranean, and Europe.
