Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the historical development of the Turkish economy, its key macroeconomic indicators, foreign trade structure, and economic relations with the European Union, and to equip them with the knowledge and skills to analyze the economic impacts of Türkiye–European Union relations and the Customs Union on the Turkish economy.

Course Content

The course chronologically examines the restructuring efforts of the 1923–1929 period, the protectionist-statist industrialization drives of the 1930s, the impacts of World War II, the attempts at outward-oriented growth in the 1950s, the planned development and import-substitution policies of the 1960–1980 period, and the January 24, 1980 Decisions that facilitated integration into the global economy. Additionally, it analyzes the macroeconomic instabilities and financial crises of the 1990s, post-2000 institutional reforms, anti-inflation programs, the floating exchange rate regime, and current economic developments. Throughout this process, Türkiye's key macroeconomic indicators, including economic growth, employment, inflation, budget deficits, and current account balances, as well as the structure, functioning, and current challenges of the agricultural, industrial, and service sectors, are evaluated from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. Within this framework, the general economic structures of Türkiye and the EU, the establishment and evolution of the EU, and Türkiye–EU relations are examined, with particular emphasis on the economic effects of the Customs Union on the Turkish economy.
