Objectives of the Course

By addressing the concept of political communication in its theoretical and applied dimensions, the aim is to enable students to analyze the communication strategies of political actors, to make critical evaluations and to have knowledge about current political communication practices.

Course Content

The course covers the historical development of political communication; speaking and listening in effective communication; influencing, effective communication and persuasive speech; definition and basic concepts of political communication; political communication and ideology; political communication, politics and power; formation of public opinion; political campaign process; political campaigns and voter analysis in Turkey; and new media and political communication, and the fundamental debates and issues related to the field of political communication are discussed.

Introduction: Definition of political communication, its scope, political actors, communication components and general structure of the course

Basic components: message, source, channel, public opinion, framing and rhetoric

Political actors: leaders, advisors, parties, NGOs and media consultancy
Week 4 - Theoretical
Traditional media and political communication: agenda setting, ethics and media ownership
Week 5 - Theoretical
New media: social media, microtargeting, digital campaigns

Election campaigns: candidate image, negative-positive advertisements, crisis management

Public opinion polls, voter behavior and political marketing

Crisis communication and perception management: types of political crises, discourse strategies

Propaganda and manipulation: populism, information, propaganda tools
