Objectives of the Course

The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge about the fundamental biochemical events occurring in the human body; to enable them to understand the structure and function of biomolecules, metabolic processes, the functioning of enzymes, and the relationship between biochemical changes and health and disease; and to equip them with the ability to apply this biochemical knowledge in their professional practice.

Course Content

The fundamental concepts of biochemistry include the biochemical structure of the cell, water and electrolyte balance, acid-base balance, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, enzymes and enzyme kinetics, vitamins and minerals, biochemical properties of hormones, energy metabolism, carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism, biological membranes, free radicals and antioxidant systems, an introduction to clinical biochemistry, and the basic principles of biochemical testing and its application in healthcare.
