Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to learn practices aimed at ensuring patient safety in the operating room environment, to become familiar with surgical instruments, equipment, and materials used in different surgical branches, to understand their duties and responsibilities in endoscopic and outpatient surgical procedures, and to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to apply care and support services in accordance with the principles of aseptic and antiseptic principles throughout the surgical process.

Course Content

This course covers safe surgical checklist applications, pre-, intra-, and post-endoscopy care practices, outpatient surgery procedures, equipment used in laparoscopic surgery, surgical instruments used in cardiovascular surgery, and types of sutures and stitches. Additionally, the introduction, uses, and operating room applications of surgical materials and equipment used in respiratory system (upper and lower respiratory tract), nervous system, and musculoskeletal system surgeries are covered theoretically and practically. Throughout the course, students develop skills in identifying and preparing surgical materials, presenting them correctly during surgery, and applying them in accordance with patient safety principles.

Learning Outcomes
1.The safe surgical checklist explains and outlines the correct steps for use in operating rooms.
2.Prepares the operating room and all surgical equipment specifically for the planned surgical procedure.
3.By examining the type of surgical procedure and system characteristics, the surgeon justifies the selection of appropriate materials, instruments, and sutures in accordance with patient safety principles.
4.Identifies the basic equipment used in laparoscopic surgery, explains their operating principles, and distinguishes their intended uses.
5.In surgical procedures, it integrates patient safety, occupational health and safety, and quality principles into the processes.
