Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to provide students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills regarding infection control in the operating room (asepsis, antisepsis, sterilization), medical and surgical hand hygiene, and sterile gowning and gloving techniques. Additionally, the course aims to ensure the competent application of basic surgical instrument identification, patient monitoring and vital signs assessment, the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist, surgical patient positioning, and patient and occupational safety protocols in the clinical field.

Course Content

This course is a theoretical and practical blend covering core clinical skills and safety protocols in surgical services. The curriculum includes differentiating sterile and contaminated fields, the WHO 6-step hand hygiene technique, and brushed/brushless surgical scrubbing, alongside assisted and independent sterile gowning and gloving procedures. It addresses the classification, counting, and documentation of basic surgical instruments, as well as intraoperative monitoring, vital signs analysis, and anesthesia chart recording. Finally, commonly used surgical patient positions (supine, trendelenburg, lithotomy, prone, lateral, sitting), the phases of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist, and patient/occupational safety regulations including risk reporting forms are covered through hands-on practice.

Name of Lecturer(s)
Learning Outcomes
1.Understands the principles of surgical asepsis in the operating room setting and correctly performs surgical handwashing and sterile donning techniques.
2.During surgery, the nurse monitors the patient’s hemodynamic parameters (vital signs) and coordinates with the anesthesia team to ensure continuous monitoring.
3.IProvides appropriate patient positioning based on the type of surgical procedure and performs surgical site preparation (scrubbing) in accordance with established protocols.
4.Classifies basic surgical instruments according to their functions, sets up the operating table, and manages instrument and gauze count protocols.
5.It incorporates patient and staff safety standards (Safe Surgery Checklist, radiation safety, and sharps safety) into workplace practices.
