Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to provide students in the field of hair care and beauty services with theoretical and practical fundamental knowledge regarding hygiene, sanitation, disinfection, sterilization, and antisepsis processes. Within the scope of this course, it aims to enable students to understand the transmission pathways of microorganisms and pathogens in a salon environment to prevent contamination and cross-contamination risks, accurately decontaminate all professional tools and equipment, and implement infection control plans. Additionally, it aims to cultivate a professional sense of vocational responsibility and ethical awareness focused on protecting both practitioner and client health at the highest level.

Learning Outcomes
1.Defines the concepts of hygiene, sanitation, contamination, and pathogens; explains their professional, ethical, and legal importance in beauty and hair care services.
2.Classifies pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) commonly encountered in salons and analyzes the physical and environmental factors affecting their proliferation.
3.Detects cross-contamination risks arising from tools, equipment, shared spaces, and practices in the salon environment; fully implements personal and workplace protective hygiene protocols.
4.Differentiates decontamination levels (cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, antisepsis); selects and applies the most accurate chemical and physical methods for various salon surfaces and client equipment.
5.Manages the pre-cleaning, packaging, indicator monitoring, and sterile storage processes of professional tools in accordance with the working principles of autoclaves and dry heat sterilizer equipment.
6.Develops an "Infection Control and Action Plan" in accordance with national legal regulations against potential infectious diseases and outbreak situations that may threaten public health in salon businesses.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Concepts of Hygiene and Sanitation (Definition and history of hygiene, its place, importance, and legal responsibilities in the field of hair care and beauty services).
Week 2 - Theoretical
Personal Hygiene and Practitioner Health (Personal hygiene of beauty specialists/hairstylists, handwashing standards, use of protective equipment, and professional posture).
Week 3 - Theoretical
Workplace and Salon Hygiene (Cleaning of salon physical areas, ventilation, lighting, waste management, and safety of sharp-pointed tools).
Week 4 - Theoretical
Foundations of Microbiology: Microorganisms and the Concept of Pathogens (General structures of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites; pathogens posing risks in the salon environment).
Week 5 - Theoretical
Physical Factors Affecting the Development of Microorganisms (Effects of temperature, moisture, dryness, and radiation on pathogen proliferation).
Week 6 - Theoretical
Environmental and Chemical Factors Affecting the Development of Microorganisms (Effects of pH balance, presence/absence of oxygen, and nutrient sources on microorganism proliferation).
Week 7 - Theoretical
Sanitation, Contamination, and Cross-Contamination (Types of contamination, risks of cross-contamination within the salon through tools, equipment, and shared spaces).
Week 8 - Theoretical
Principles of Decontamination: Concepts of Disinfection, Sterilization, and Antisepsis (Differences between the three core concepts, their levels of efficacy, and boundaries of application in salons).
Week 9 - Theoretical
Disinfection Methods - I (Physical disinfection techniques, utilization of heat and ultraviolet [UV] rays in salon disinfection).
Week 10 - Theoretical
Disinfection Methods - II (Chemical disinfectants, quaternary ammonium compounds, alcohols, and preparation/usage protocols for salon tools and equipment).
Week 11 - Theoretical
Sterilization Methods - I (Physical sterilization, working principles of moist heat [Autoclave] and dry heat [Sterilizer/Oven] equipment).
Week 12 - Theoretical
Sterilization Methods - II (Pre-cleaning and packaging of salon tools, monitoring indicators, and sterile storage conditions).
Week 13 - Theoretical
Antisepsis Methods - I (Foundations of skin and mucous membrane antisepsis, antiseptic agents that can be safely used on living tissues).
Week 14 - Theoretical
Antisepsis Methods - II and Infection Control Planning (Hand/skin antisepsis protocols before and after client service; outbreak and infection control action planning in salons).
