Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to provide students with the biochemical working principles of cosmetic delivery systems in formulations, the foundation of cosmeceutical products, and international legal regulations regarding cosmetic product safety on a scientific basis. It aims to enable students to analyze classic and novel delivery systems, comprehend the development and testing processes of products at the cosmetic-drug intersection, evaluate adverse reactions related to product use, and attain the vision to execute their professional applications in the sector in accordance with international (European Union, REACH) safety and quality standards.

Course Content

This course covers the theoretical examination of classic and novel delivery systems used in cosmetic products and the interaction factors of these active substances with the skin. Within the framework of the curriculum, the analysis of the structural boundaries among cosmetics, cosmeceuticals, and drugs, product development (R&D) processes, and potential adverse clinical effects related to cosmetics are discussed in detail. Furthermore, in the context of regulations such as SCCNFP and REACH, cosmetic product safety in the European Union, manufacturer/practitioner obligations, laboratory testing methods for products, and legal analyses of high-risk cosmetic groups subjected to specific measures are covered.

1.To be able to explain the chemical structures and skin penetration principles of classic and advanced delivery systems used in cosmetic products.
2.To be able to analyze the legal and biochemical differences between cosmetic, cosmeceutical, and pharmaceutical (drug) products.
3.To be able to evaluate product safety by interpreting cosmetic legislation at the European Union and international levels (REACH, SCCS, etc.).
4.To be able to identify the causes of adverse reactions and toxicological risks that may occur in cosmetic product formulations.
5.To be able to sequence the stability, microbiological, and dermatological testing processes that a cosmetic product must undergo before being placed on the market.
